About Meteor Çukuru
Meteor Çukuru (Meteor Pit) is located 35 km east of Doğubayazıt, 2 km from the Iranian border, between the Gürbulak Border Gate and Sarı Çavuş (Gülveren) Village. Approximately 60 meters deep and 35 meters wide, this pit is believed to have formed in 1892 as a result of a meteorite impact. According to some sources, it is the second-largest meteor crater in the world after the one in Alaska. However, some scientific studies also suggest that the pit is a sinkhole formed by the dissolution of karstic rocks.
