Zeugma
8.7 km · The ancient city of Zeugma, located in the Nizip district of Gaziantep, was founded around 300 BC by Seleucus I Nicator, one of Alexander the Great's generals. It served as an important trade and military center throughout history due to its strategic location on the Euphrates River. Although a significant portion of the ancient city was submerged by the Birecik Dam, the mosaics unearthed during rescue excavations are displayed in the Zeugma Mosaic Museum in Gaziantep. Zeugma is particularly known for the mosaics adorning its wealthy Roman villas, which are considered significant examples worldwide.
