Historic Sites in Haliliye

Göbekli Tepe is a Neolithic archaeological site in Upper Mesopotamia (al-Jazira) in modern-day Turkey. The settlement was inhabited from around 9500 BCE to at least 8000 BCE, during the Pre-Pottery Neolithic. It is known for its large circular structures that contain large stone pillars – among the world's oldest known megaliths. Many of these pillars are decorated with anthropomorphic details, clothing, and sculptural reliefs of wild animals, providing archaeologists insights into prehistoric religion and the iconography of the period. The 15 m (50 ft) high, 8 ha (20-acre) tell is covered with ancient domestic structures and other small buildings, quarries, and stone-cut cisterns from the Neolithic, as well as some traces of activity from later periods.

Kazane Höyük is a mound located approximately 4 km southeast of the city of Şanlıurfa. According to research on organic remains in the soil in the region, it is understood that there was dense vegetation in the plain in the middle of the 3rd millennium BC, rich in reeds, rushes, and grass species. The climate must have been a wetter climate. The surrounding hills were probably forested.

Located in Haliliye, Şanlıurfa, Göbeklitepe is the world's oldest known temple complex, dating back to approximately 9600 BCE. This Neolithic archaeological site is notable for its monumental T-shaped stone pillars and animal reliefs. Göbeklitepe was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2018 and has reshaped significant understandings of human history.

Karahan Tepe, located in the Haliliye district of Şanlıurfa, is a significant Pre-Pottery Neolithic archaeological site. Discovered in 1997 by Bahattin Çelik, the site features T-shaped stelae similar to those at Göbeklitepe, as well as structures carved directly from the bedrock. Excavations have revealed sculptures and unique architectural elements, offering valuable insights into the beliefs and way of life during the Neolithic period.
