Kef Kalesi
5.6 km · Kef Kalesi is an ancient Urartian fortress located on the northern shore of Lake Van, approximately 6 kilometers north of Adilcevaz, on the southern slopes of Mount Süphan. Situated at an elevation of 2,200 to 2,300 meters above sea level, the fortress was constructed during the reign of Urartian King Rusa II (685–645 BCE). It is notable for its impressive Urartian architectural and sculptural remains. The site includes a multi-room palace complex and storage rooms containing hundreds of pithoi (large earthenware jars). Initial official excavations at Kef Kalesi took place between 1964 and 1972, with regular excavations resuming in 2021.
