The monument was erected in memory of Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk's visit to Hacıbektaş on December 22-23, 1919. Atatürk stayed in Hacıbektaş on his way to Ankara after the Sivas Congress and received support from the Alevi-Bektashi community for the National Struggle. The first monumental sculpture in Hacıbektaş was the Hacı Bektaş Veli Monument, erected in Cumhuriyet Square in 1977.
