Health and safety

The emergency number, pharmacies, water and staying comfortable.

One emergency number: 112

Ambulance, police and fire brigade are all reached on 112, free from any phone. The main tourist areas also have tourist police offices (Turizm Polisi) used to helping visitors in several languages.

Pharmacies

Pharmacies (eczane, marked with a red “E”) are everywhere, and pharmacists are a good first stop for minor problems. At night and on Sundays an on-duty pharmacy (nöbetçi eczane) is open in every neighbourhood — its address is posted in the window of every closed pharmacy.

Water and food

Locals usually drink bottled or filtered water, which is cheap and sold everywhere. Street food and markets are one of the joys of Turkey — a busy stall with a quick turnover is a good sign.

Sun and heat

From June to September the coast and the inland plains get hot. Plan sightseeing for the morning and late afternoon, carry water and a hat, and spend the midday hours in the shade of a tea garden.

Rules and prices change — for entry requirements always check the official sources mentioned here.
